Helpful Tips for using your Rancilio Silvia
Numbers in brackets refer to Fig.1 of the manufacturer’s manual.
- Fill the water tank (filtered water is recommended in your espresso machine as hard water may react to the metals inside your machine and can cause blockages). Always make sure there is plenty of water in the tank.
- Plug the machine in and turn it on by the main switch. Turn the power switch on (1). Turn the coffee switch on (3), this will dispense water out of the group head and fill the boiler up to its maximum level ready to brew. Once you have a steady flow of water out of the group head (approx 10 - 15 seconds), turn the coffee switch off (3). This step is very important to insure the boiler is filled with water.
- Turn the steam switch on (5). When the heating/boiler light (2) switches off the machine is ready to froth milk.
- Frothing milk may take a little practice we recommend you “bleed” the steamer. This is done by switching the steam button (5) on (wait for the indicator light next to the main switch to turn off) and turning the knob. Turning the knob will release a steady stream of boiling water; this however will shortly turn into steam.

- The steaming function in your machine forces the machine to build up pressure and can empty the boiler; we recommend that you refill the boiler after frothing your milk by turning the hot water delivery switch on (4) and opening up the knob. Direct the steam arm into an empty jug. It will start as steam but will quickly turn into a steady stream of water. Turn the knob off and the hot water switch off (4). Never use the steaming function for longer than 4-5 minutes at a time. If you need to keep steaming after this time has elasped (i.e making multiple hot chocolates in a row), refill the boiler by allowing water to come out of the group head or hot water to come out of the steam wand - as explained above. Once water is coming out in a steady stream you will know that the boiler has been refilled and you can turn the steaming switch back on without risk of exposing the element within the boiler to air from evaporation.
- Fill handle with freshly ground coffee (requires a fine grind - same fineness as a commercial machine). Please remember to use the correct filter. Then tamp the coffee down into the basket where the ridge is.
- Place handle into the group head and turn as far to the right of the machine as you can. Turn on the coffee switch (3); this will start the coffee pouring through. The aim is to get 30ml of coffee in your cup in around 25 seconds.
- Empty the group handle, the used coffee (puck) should bang out in one piece which is another indicator that you have the correct fineness.
- Add milk and foam as required for your coffee beverage.
- The top of the machine can be used as a heating tray for cups. Make sure you empty the drip tray and wipe of any excess water under the drip tray or it can cause rust if left wet.
- Please read the manufacturers use and maintenance instructions before using your machine.
Most importantly have fun and enjoy your coffee experience!
